Eclipse Steam Roller – Wood Fired Outdoor Sauna

This wood fired sauna dubbed ‘Steam Roller’ was designed and built by Marc Goodson and Travis Skinner of 100handedones in 2017.

This sauna features an exterior steel skeleton with insulated cedar walls.  It’s rusted patina roof contours over bent steel tubes and flat bars cantilevering out over the small entry door designed to keep the steam in.  We used a torch treatment on the siding called Shou Sugi Ban along with a buffed in tung oil which removed some of the burntness.   Underneath the double bench makes room outside for stacking firewood.  Once stoked, the stove kicks in about 30-45 mins and lasts for a couple hours at the optimal temperature for a sweat.  We like this design a lot and could be commissioned to do another one very similar with a few minor design changes.  Travis took a lot of process photos, you can see them at pairoducks.org where you can also see some other truly amazing work by Travis.
